Happy Fourth of July: 250 Years of Independence

News & Commentary

Jul 02, 2026

The Fourth of July is one of the best holiday weekends of the year for a number of reasons. First and foremost, it is a reminder of how lucky we are to be Americans. It not only signifies our independence, but our resilience. It occurs at a time of the year filled with warm weather and extra hours of sunlight. Everyone seems to be in a better mood in the summer.

This year’s celebration carries a little extra meaning as we approach the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. It’s a major milestone for us to celebrate and it also encourages reflection. In 1776, the idea of independence was bold and uncertain. The men who signed that document weren’t stepping into clarity. They were taking a risk and stepping into the unknown.

What they created wasn’t perfect, and it wasn’t finished. In many ways, it still isn’t. That’s part of what makes this country so unique. It’s not static. We’re always looking for ways to improve it. As we celebrate the 250-year mark, it’s worth considering how much has changed and appreciating the ideals that have endured for 250 years and counting. We’ve faced periods of division and uncertainty before. Despite that, there’s been a consistent thread of perseverance and progress over time.

In our line of work, we talk often about long-term thinking. Markets don’t move in straight lines, and neither does history. There are setbacks along the way, but the bigger picture tends to reward patience, discipline, and a bit of optimism. That perspective is very similar to the foundations our country was built on.

So, as you gather with family and friends this weekend doing your favorite Fourth of July activities, take a moment to appreciate both the present and the path that got us here. More importantly, take the time to be grateful to those who made major sacrifices for us to be here celebrating the 250th anniversary of our independence in the greatest country in the world.

We wish you a safe, relaxing, and enjoyable Fourth of July.
